Join the Lab

Who are we?

We are a highly collaborative and creative group of scientists with diverse backgrounds and interests, but united by our drive to develop innovative genetic technologies that can address pressing global problems related to insect vectored disease.
Our expertise spans from basic principles of molecular and synthetic biology to genomics, evolution, microbiology, cell biology, developmental biology, and biochemistry.

Prospective PostDocs

We invite applications from highly talented and motivated postdoctoral candidates with relevant experience in genetics/genomics, synthetic biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, computational biology, evolution, developmental biology, medical entomology and related fields.

Please send the following to Dr. Marshall:

  • a cover letter that describes your past research experience and motivation for applying to the Akbari lab
  • a brief (<1 page) description of proposed research for your postdoctoral appointment PDFs of all published papers and pre-prints
  • 3 letters of recommendation (to be sent directly by the letter writers)

Prospective Graduate Students

Candidates for graduate study should apply either through the Department of Entomology, or the Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics program (GGB), or the Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology Program (CMDB), or the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program. The latter three programs allow graduate students to rotate through multiple labs in the first year, providing a diversity of research experiences prior to selecting a lab. For application information and more details about the graduate programs, visit the Entomology Graduate program, GGB Program, CMDB program, or the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program admissions sites.

Prospective Undergraduate Students

We invite motivated undergraduates with previous experience in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or computational biology to apply for a position in the lab through the Undergraduate Research Portal web site. A minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, spanning two semesters and a summer, is expected. When available, openings for undergraduate research positions will be posted at the Undergraduate Research Portal web site.
